Never before had a painter molded nature to this point before painting it, creating his work twice. In 1893, ten years after his arrival in Giverny, Claude Monet bought the land adjoining his property, had a pond dug and declared “It is only for recreation and pleasure of the eyes, and also to have models to paint. ; I only grow plants like water lilies, reeds, lilies of different varieties that grow spontaneously along our rivers“.
